The editor that stopped jumping

How we rebuilt an invoice editor that jumped every time you typed, without stopping anyone sending invoices.

Invoice 0142 in the rebuilt editor, with the active row measured at 0 px of shift

The problem

Ledgerline’s invoice editor had one bug everyone knew by heart. Type a long line item and the row grew, the total below it moved, and your cursor went with it. People had learned to type in a notes app and paste. Support had a saved reply for it.

What I did

The honest fix was a rebuild, so I did it in small pieces behind a flag while everyone kept sending invoices. Rows got a fixed rhythm, totals got their own column that never reflows, and every change was measured against one number: layout shift while typing.

We shipped to five per cent of studios first, then half, then everyone. Nobody wrote in, which is the best review an invoice editor can get.

What changed

Layout shift while typing went from 0.31 to zero. A first invoice now takes four minutes instead of eleven. The saved reply was retired with honours.
