The accessibility checklist

The checklist Fieldwork still uses, started after a theatre ticket we couldn’t sell.

The Before launch accessibility checklist with four of five checks done

How it started

In 2019 someone emailed a theatre we had built a site for. They couldn’t buy a ticket with their screen reader: the seat picker was a picture of seats. We fixed it that week, and I started a checklist so it couldn’t happen again.

What’s on it

Twelve checks, each one something a person can test in a minute without special tools. Every image has alt text that says what it shows. Focus is always visible. Forms work with a keyboard alone. Text contrast is at least 4.5 to 1. Buying the thing works with a screen reader, start to finish.

Still in use

Fieldwork still runs it before every launch. It catches something small almost every time and, as far as we know, nobody has emailed about a ticket since.
